Eastern Michigan University defeated Big Ten opponent Rutgers Saturday in what can be described as the most important regular season victory in team history. The final score out of High Point Solutions Field in Piscataway, New Jersey was EMU 16 Rutgers 13, and it was a nail biter to the end.
Noteworthy is the fact that this was Eastern's first win over a "Power 5" opponent and this EMU alum couldn't be more proud. I should add that Eastern's victory over the Scarlet Knights goes down as Eastern's first victory in 38 attempts over a Big 10 team.
Eastern's defense performed spectacularly holding a speedy Rutgers offense to 326 total yards. Eastern's defense picked off two Rutgers passes including one crucial interception by sophomore defensive back Brody Hoying in the 4th quarter.
Give credit to senior gun-slinging EMU Quarterback Brogan Roback for picking apart the Scarlet Knight defense with point on passes to numerous receivers including Sergio Bailey and Antoine Porter. Bailey caught five passes for 107 yards, while Porter snagged seven passes for 62 yard. Brogan Roback finished the game completing 19 of 36 passed for 260 yards, including one touchdown pass.
As for the EMU ground attack, running back Shaq Vann rushed for 67 yards on 16 carries. Vann spent much of last season on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.
This was a tremendous win for the Eastern Michigan football program.
Next week is a bye week for our EMU Eagles, but EMU return to Rynearson Stadium "The Factory" Saturday, September 23 for EMU's Mid-American Conference opener against Ohio University. See you at the game!
