Here we are. February 14th. Another Valentine's Day. My! My! My!
I'm seein' RED all over the place!
It's a LOVEFEST!! Countless bouquets of red roses. Hugs and kisses
galore. Hallmark guestimates that 114 million greeting cards were
exchanged worldwide in 2016, AND, according to the National Retail
Federation, the average person will spent about $147.00 for gifts and
such. Whew!! That's a real celebration of love and happiness.
AIN'T LOVE GRAND!!
But, how did this all happen? I, like many others, figured this was
just a gimmick by Hallmark, Flowers.com., and restaurants to get us to
spend some money on our honey so they could stash some cash. A-ha!
Not so fast. A little history will solve the mystery!
Our friends at History.com tell us that Pope Gelasius deemed February
14 Valentine's Day near 498 AD.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first “Valentine”
greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell
in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor’s daughter —
who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is
alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your
Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today.
AIN'T LOVE GRAND!!
The holiday continued to gain popularity in the 17th and 18th century.
The first Valentine's card was produced in the 1840's. With onset of
faster communications in the modern era, Valentine's Day became a
major force in the retail industry.
So now we know Valentines' Day isn't just about roses, candy and
candlelight dinners. Now we know the season has a reason. So,
forget your cares and woes. Reach out and tell that special someone
you've know forever just how much they mean to you. The least it will
do is enhance your chance for romance!
Have a great Valentine's Day.
AIN'T LOVE GRAND!!
